A compulsive gambler from Austria who piled up a debt of 800,000 Euros over a four-year period playing land based slot machines operated by Novomatic, used his gambling addiction to win a legal case. He won a 440,000 Euros judgment in a Viennese court after he showed psychiatric evidence and convinced the court that his debt with Novomatic should be annulled. Most of Austria slots are located outside of casinos, a situation which will be addressed next year when new laws will be put into force ensuring slots are confined to casino establishments. Novomatic is concerned about this and will probably take the case to the Austrian constitutional court.
